TL;DRLo clave en 30 segundos
  • Shipping is the second biggest cost line after the product itself. In my operation it's 15% of revenue — more than TikTok Shop's commission (9%) and more than affiliate commissions (8%).
  • Costs vary by origin country, destination country, package weight (3 tiers: 0-5kg / 5-10kg / 10-30kg), and delivery type (home vs PUDO pickup point).
  • "Free shipping" eats your margin — many sellers absorb 100% of shipping cost without calculating impact. Buyer-paid options can save you €1.50-2 per order with little conversion drop.
  • Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) vs your own carriers: FBT is right for new sellers without volume; own logistics starts making sense at 200+ orders/day when you can negotiate carrier rates.
  • A 0.2kg miscalculation in packaging can kick you into the next weight tier and double the cost. Optimize packaging to stay under tier thresholds.

Shipping is your second biggest cost

After product cost, shipping is the line that eats most of your revenue. In my operation it represents 15% of total revenue — more than TikTok Shop's commission (9%) and more than affiliate commissions (8%).

And yet, most sellers don't optimize shipping. They pick "free shipping" because it sounds good and absorb the cost without calculating the impact.

How shipping works on TikTok Shop Europe

TikTok Shop Europe offers its own logistics system. When a buyer places an order, TikTok Shop assigns a carrier and manages pickup and delivery. As a seller, you pay a net shipping cost that depends on:

  1. Origin country (where you ship from)
  2. Destination country (where the buyer lives)
  3. Package weight (3 tiers: 0-5kg, 5-10kg, 10-30kg)
  4. Delivery type (home vs pickup point — PUDO)

The difference between "free shipping" and "buyer pays"

When you configure a product on TikTok Shop, you pick one of these options:

Free shipping: the buyer pays nothing for shipping. You absorb 100% of the cost. Generates more sales but reduces your margin.

Buyer pays home delivery: the buyer pays part of the shipping. You pay the difference (TikTok Shop net cost − what the buyer pays).

Buyer pays PUDO (pickup point): the buyer pays for pickup-point delivery. Usually cheaper than home delivery.

The decision isn't trivial. "Free shipping" can mean €3.50 per order coming out of your margin. With 100 orders/day, that's €350 daily. If the buyer pays €2 of the €3.50, your cost drops to €1.50 — €150 instead of €350.

Routes and costs: what you need to know

Costs vary significantly by route. Spain to Spain is cheaper than Spain to Germany. But not every seller operates from a single country.

The most efficient routes I've seen:

  • Domestic (same origin and destination country): always the cheapest
  • Neighboring countries: Spain-France, Germany-France are reasonably economical
  • Long routes: Spain-Ireland, Spain-Germany are the most expensive

Weight tiers make a huge difference. A product at 4.9kg pays the 0-5kg tier. A product at 5.1kg jumps to the 5-10kg tier and the cost can double. If your product sits near a tier boundary, optimize packaging to stay below the lower tier.

Fulfilled by TikTok vs your own logistics

The big question. TikTok Shop offers its fulfillment system (FBT), but you can also manage shipping yourself with your own carriers.

Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT):

  • Pros: integrated, no logistics management, automatic tracking, better buyer experience
  • Cons: fixed costs you don't negotiate, total dependency on TikTok Shop

Your own logistics:

  • Pros: negotiate rates with carriers, flexibility, you can optimize routes
  • Cons: full operational management, technical integration with TikTok Shop, error risk

For sellers just starting out, FBT is the logical option. You don't have volume to negotiate carrier rates and the management would consume time you need for other things. When you hit high volume (200+ orders/day), it starts making sense to evaluate your own logistics.

How to optimize your shipping costs

  1. Don't give away free shipping automatically. Test "buyer pays" with part of the cost. Many buyers are willing to pay €2-3 for shipping if the product interests them.

  2. Watch the weight. If your product weighs 4.8kg and packaging brings it to 5.2kg, you've just jumped tiers. Optimize packaging.

  3. Concentrate domestic shipments. If you sell mainly in Spain, your shipping costs will be the lowest. Expansion to other countries is good for volume but worse for shipping margin.

  4. Calculate shipping cost BEFORE pricing. Not after. ShopSeller's shipping comparator tool shows the cost per route so you can include it in your list price calculation.
